The main deposits of Kazakhstan are located on the territory of Atyrau region:

- The Kashagan field is located in the northern part of the Caspian Sea in the territorial waters of the Republic of Kazakhstan and covers an area of approximately 75 km x 45 km. Geological reserves of oil in the field are estimated at about 4.5 billion tons of oil.

- Tengiz field is located in Atyrau region of Kazakhstan, 350 km to the south-east of Atyrau. This is the deepest oil field in the world - supergiant, the upper oil-bearing reservoir of which lies at a depth of about 4000 meters or 13,000 feet.

Atyrau is the "Oil Capital" of Kazakhstan, a member of the World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP), which includes 18 oil capitals of states.

  • Atyrau region employs more than 600 medium and large enterprises, whose share in the industrial production of the republic is about 24%, and more than 30% of them with the participation of foreign capital
  • Investments in fixed assets in 2015 amounted to 1.4 trillion tenge, including external investments of 847 billion tenge.
