The Akim of Mangystau Region, Nurdaulet Kilybay, visited Organic Fish LLP, a participant in the Aktau Seaport Special Economic Zone (SEZ), to review the company’s project for fish farming in the Caspian Sea.

The project, being implemented within the Special Economic Zone, involves farming salmonid species in offshore sea cages located in a deep-water area of the Caspian Sea, approximately 20 kilometres from the Port of Kuryk. The company plans to gradually increase its production capacity to 5,000 tonnes of market-size fish per year.

In September 2025, the first three sea cages, each 38 metres in diameter, were installed offshore. From November through the end of 2025, a total of 95,000 juvenile fish with a combined biomass of approximately 20 tonnes were stocked in the cages. The fish, which initially had an average weight of 200 grams, have now reached 1.8–2.5 kilograms.

The company plans to harvest its first production and bring it to the domestic market in September this year.

“President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev consistently emphasises the importance of developing domestic production, diversifying the economy and strengthening food security. The Organic Fish project is one of the concrete steps being taken in this direction. By making effective use of the natural potential of the Caspian Sea and developing a new area of production, we are creating an opportunity to supply the domestic market with locally produced fish. It is therefore important to gradually increase the project’s production capacity and ensure the high-quality implementation of the plans that have been set,” Nurdaulet Kilybay said.

To increase the project’s production capacity, work is underway this year to install three additional sea cages. They have already been positioned at the designated sites, and anchoring and securing works are currently in progress. The additional cages are expected to be commissioned before the beginning of September, after which they will be stocked with fish.

By the end of the year, approximately 470,000 juvenile fish are expected to be stocked across all six cages. The juveniles will have an average weight of 200–300 grams, with a total biomass of approximately 114 tonnes.

According to the project plan, production capacity is expected to reach 150 tonnes of market-size fish in 2026, 1,300 tonnes in 2027 and 5,000 tonnes in 2028. The number of sea cages is planned to be further increased thereafter.

The Head of the Region noted that the development of marine aquaculture will help diversify Mangystau’s economic potential, create new jobs and increase the supply of domestically produced fish to the local market.

By effectively harnessing the natural potential of the Caspian Sea, the Organic Fish project is contributing to the development of marine fish farming in Kazakhstan and helping advance the country’s aquaculture industry to a new technological level.
